Does a remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean hold the final clue to the Mayan’s apocalyptic predictions concerning 2012? One explorer thinks he’s discovered the answers that have eluded man for centuries. I know that I, for one, will be glued to my TV for this one.  I’m not normally one of those “Doom and Gloom” type of people.  But this 2012 thing has me a bit concerned.  So I’ve been doing all the research I can to find out if everything they’re saying is going to happen is really going to happen or not.

A friend of mine was at a party of Science Fiction fans over the holidays, and he was talking to a woman about a recent science fiction novel that described a post-nuclear future where all the women were now warriors.  The woman was an intense feminist, so she really liked the novel, and remarked, “It’s fun to read about the end of the world in a book.  The author wipes out this male-dominated society, so women can start over again and do a better job.”

I couldn’t help but think, the “author” of this universe — God by whatever name you call HIm/Her must also want to do the same thing from time to time.

And we know it. Just as we’re imperfect, so sometimes things get so bad it’s time to start over. That’s indicated by the Great Flood stories that are nearly universal in human cultures.

Of course, since God or Universal Intelligence is beyond time, what happens in 2012 is already known to God, and so has been revealed in prophecy to many cultures around the world for thousands of years.  All know and tell of a time when God, in effect, starts over again. 

But of course, exactly what’s going to happen is not known to us imperfect humans. Yet we can educate ourselves to prepare ourselves.

One of the things that I’ve done to help prepare myself and my family, is to sign up for a newsletter that I get every week from 2012: The Official Countdown. 

We have only a short left to prepare ourselves for the most fantastic events of our lifetimes, of all human history.  If we just continue to go about daily lives as usual, a ceaseless round of working, playing and sleeping . . . we can expect to be shocked and surprised by whatever happens December 21, 2012.

We can close our eyes. We can pretend that if we hear no 2012, see no 2012 and speak no 2012 there will be NO 2012 (or, more accurately, that 2012 will be just another year).

In Thailand and other Buddhist countries, people “do good” (accumulate favorable karma) by giving food to monks. Most of the people are poor, so they don’t have enough food for themselves and their families . . . but every morning they put rice or vegetables into the begging bowls of the local monks.

Now, the monks have learned, and teach the people, that their lives are temporary. They are meditating and practicing to attain Nirvana, to escape the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

As monks, they are in training to rid themselves of all desire, including that for food.

Yet every morning they accept food from the people. And in return they teach school to the children and provide spiritual guidance to the entire community.

And by accepting the food, they are allowing the people to accumulate good karma.

Is it a fair trade-off? Buddhists obviously think so.

Now, I certainly can’t compare myself to a monk. Or tell you that in joining 2012: The Official Countdown you’ll accumulate good karma.

I do know that if I gave it away for free or for a small price, I’d be doing you and 2012 an injustice.  Because, like it or not, we unconsciously assume things are worth what we pay for them.  Therefore, to many people free = worthless.

Of course, I feel a little silly saying you get a “lifetime” membership, since it won’t be needed after December 21, 2012. But until then, it’s everything you need.

For those who are keeping a close eye on 2012, and even for those who believe that anything that happens won’t be because of the date, the question of survival is a pressing one. Is there any way for people to prepare for future?

Is there anything that they can do to survive the 2012 apocalypse, whether it be caused by a passing planet’s (Nibiru, Eris, or Planet X) gravitational field, climate change incited by man, or a solar maximum that causes geomagnetic reversal?

We have seen in just the past few years that the world is not ready for many natural catastrophes – Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ike, the Sumatra earthquake that caused a tsunami, unprecedented flooding and tornadoes, the Tambora volcano eruption. All of these natural disasters happened one at a time and were still devastating. Panic caused chaos, and chaos led to even more loss of lives.

Imagine what it would be like in 2012 if all of these things started happening one right after the other … or all at once. Imagine if our electrical grids turned off. How many people in industrialized countries would be able to survive without someone giving them temperature control, hot and cold clean water, sewage handling, food stores? Or if our streets split and bridges collapsed? If buildings shattered and imploded?

The vision of an apocalyptic future is a terrifying one, and one for which this world is not prepared. Even if people are out of harm’s way in the 2012 year, they will feel the consequences of catastrophe – financial markets will crash, resources will become scarce, anarchy will become rampant, and wars will break out. No matter whether you are in the middle of the proverbial storm or not, everyone will be negatively affected by global natural disasters. And it is clear that survival in 2012 will not be easy … and it may be impossible for many.

The government has only a limited system set up for human survival. There are talks of subterranean and even undersea operations that can hold vast numbers of people in order to preserve the species, but not nearly enough to house the world’s population. At the very least, the government and the military will be housed in these places as well as a number of scientists, physicians, and other caregivers.

Those chosen will not be able to bring along their families – the government will take only the people who are necessary. However, the average man on the street will likely be left to their own defenses, limited by their lack of survivalist technology.
