What Is This Theory About The World Ending In 2012?

Someone was telling me just before that in 1999 there was a theory that all planes would crash or something? I’m not sure about that and I can’t find it on any search engine.
I was just wondering how the world would end, supposedly. And where these thoughts are coming from?
This would really help me understand. And with the new movie, 2012 coming out.. Is it really going to happen? Or is this just something someone made up? Or is it mostly about religious views?
THANKS!

Those aren’t scientific theories. Those are crazy speculations. Those crazy speculations come from people being hysterical Chicken Littles. Y2k was a minor bug, which people knew about well ahead of time. I am skeptical the airlines had such poorly written software* to begin with. Mostly the concern was with banks.
2012 is just a movie. Did the world freeze over two days after “The Day After Tomorrow” came out? It isn’t even religious views at all. The Mayans (from whom the 2012 date was hijacked) certainly don’t think the world is going to end, there were predictions found nearby for centuries past 2012. In their calendar, it’s just a significant aniversery of the beginning of the calendar. Just like 2000 was, or the year 6000 will be for people who believe the world is about 6000 years old (good luck getting them to agree exactly which year that will be).
I mean, seriously. Don’t people have a more immediate sanity check than asking a question on Y!A?
edit: * Storing the year as two alphanumeric characters compared to storing it as a number. Using exactly the same amount of space, two alphanumeric characters can go from 00 to 99. A two byte integer can go from 0 to 65535. A bank’s software, which cares what year it is, for calculating interest, if written by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing will use the alphanumeric way. For airplanes, where they care what the current time is, is going to use integers, and keep track of seconds ticking on the clock, and then convert that to human readable when needed.
People think the world is going to end on 2012 because the Mayan calendar ended on that date. The reason people thought planes were going to crash on 1999 was because computers weren’t set up for the switch to the year 2000 so they thought the computer systems on planes would shut down. But they didn’t. There’s always some kind of world ending prophesy coming out, after 2012 it will be another year and another and another.
The plane crash query was probably about the Y2K fear. If computers could not change their dates correctly into the 21st century, then things like planes and pacemakers would stop working.
2012 is the end of a long cycle of the Mayans calendar system. Mayans would say that a new cycle starts but many Western people have used this to create panic and sell books. Even some Christians tried to get attention for the Second Coming by talking about the Mayan calendar too.
All this 2012 nonsense is what we in the scientific community refer to as “a steaming pile of horse ****.”
It’s based on the fact that the Mayan calendar runs out in 2012, and since they were quite good at predicting celestial events some people have assumed that the world is going to end.
Interestingly, the Mayans themselves did not believe that this meant the end of the world. It’s something more akin to a New Year’s festival, only on a bigger scale because it’s the end of a larger cycle than a year.
All the Mayans predicted was that there would be a great change on Dec 21, 2012. Not the end of the world, it’s just an anniversary of creation. The Mayans were brilliant astronomers and there is a very unique cosmic event that will occur around then. The belief that the world is going to end then is a Western myth and not a Mayan one. You don’t have to take my word for it, see what the surviving Maya have to say about it in the news article below.
Get a life!
The mayans couldn’t even predict their own extinction, & you are going to believe that they could predict the end of the world?

Sure we are going to die!
Like we were all going to die when all the 9 planets all lined up?
Like we were all going to die at Y2K?
Like we were all going to die on 6/6/06?
Need I go on?
actually peach apparently the Mayans predicted the year that strange “pale faced gods” would arrive on their shores… just something to think about.
According to the Mayan calendar the world will end in 2012. The Mayans have been right about many other events, so people believe it.
don’t nobody know when the world is going to end.
the world could end tomorrow.
That it will sell movie tickets
What is this theory?
It’s BS, that’s what it is.
The Y2K panic had to do with the fact that modern computers were not designed to handle the number 2 taking the place of the number 1 when the year rolled over from 1999 to 2000. This meant that no one knew if the computers would “crash” causing them to not function any more. People worried that anything using a computer to function would suddenly stop working and this included things like the internet, airplanes, banking, our utilities etc…
Now 2012 is different because we have known about the 2012 end date for a much longer time. The Mayans of course who designed the calendars that predict the end-date of Dec 21, 2012 created it almost 12,000 years ago. As a modern people, we are just jumping onto the bandwagon about it. The reason for the confusion is that there is no written explanation of the calendars only what can be deduced from the Mayan heiroglyphs. What archaeologists do know is that the calendar accurately predicts the position of the sun, earth and moon relative to the Milky Way galaxy and that all three will line up with the center of our galaxy on this date. What effect it will have on our planet is unknown, but you have to wonder what they were trying to tell us by creating a calendar that in effect predicts the “end of time” on this date. Is it merely the end of a cycle of earth wobbling that will start all over again with no bumps in the road? Or, the coming of worldwide cataclysmic events and the end of the world? Only you can decide that. However, there is a very good book (even if your not a Christian) that sums it up nicely and looks at ALL the viewpoints without judgement: called 2012 The Bible and the End of the World by Mark Hitchcock.
