When their prediction the world would end in 2003 didn't happen (obviously they must have misinterpreted what the aliens told them through their brain implants...) they decided to revise the date to 2012. And since 12/21/2012 is the start of a new cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar, that's a good date. And since no one will bother to do any research of their own, we'll just say that the calendar ENDS on that date and that meant that the Mayans predicted the world would end then too). But, since a few people would do a bit of research, those pillars of veracity added a bunch of nonsense science (like "pole shift" and "galactic alignment" and "Nibiru") to the pile of trash they were building. And suddenly, we have a bunch of uneducated people that are too lazy to do any research of their own panicking about something that isn't real and has no basis in fact.
