Why Are People Saying The World Will End In 2012?

If so why are people still going to college and saving money? Any scientific proof of this? (from NASA maybe?)
Is it because of the elections in 2012 and the republicans getting elected?

because they are idiots that don’t have anything else to think about.
“2012 is claimed by some with New age beliefs to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or alternatively an apocalypse). There is disagreement among believers whether 2012 will see an end of civilization, or humanity will be elevated to a higher level.”
I got that from the wikipedia.
Personally i think, the world as we know it is going to end, but all thats going to happen, is that there is going to be a spiritual upliftment. Meaning human beings will become more aware of Who I Am.
Although, the world might end, but life never will.
People have been saying that because the Mayan calender (made thousands and thousands of years ago) ended on December 21st 2012.
Also a scientist, I forget his name, made tons of predictions, most of all came true, and also predicted the world would end on December 21st. Creepy coincidence. However, it’s highly unlikely that will happen though.
No, it is based upon the Mayan calender coming to an end, and predictions that the Mayans made which can’t even be deciphered correctly considering there are several different versions of what this prediction is. I believe something significant will happen on this date or begin happening beforehand, such as what we are seeing with the economy, but this date has something in store for us and was predetermined and planned by the wealthy and elite of our society centuries ago. I know it sounds crazy, I just think this prediction has some legitimacy to it. I don’t believe the world will end, but I do think the world as we know it will end.
This belief is based upon the Mayan Calendar which has thus far been very accurate and references “the end of the world” on 12-21-2012.
The problem is that people day fail to realize that “the end of the world” simply meant that there would be major changes to the way of life that we currently know. In most ancient cultures endings and beginnings are interchangeable/one in the same.
No one knows why it will end or if it will. They think it might because there is an ancient calandar of events made by the mayans that has supposedly predicted many events in the world as time has gone on, and that calandar ends in December of 2012. So it has always been believed that if that calendar is accurate the world might either end or something huge might happen that changes everything.
Because a lot of ancient civilization’s calendars end in the year of 2012. So like the mayans and other groups (who had no contact with eachother) their calendars all went up to the year 2012 and stoppped.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012
The ancient texts of the Mayans have been severely misused (This civilization predicted the end of their long count at precisely December 21, 2012; which is a count of approximately 260000 years. They personified this year with great significance (As it was portrayed not only in the few texts recovered from the burnings the Spanish demanded because they considered it “heathenism” but in many temple paintings as well.) No one knows for sure what will happen on this day, some say it’s just the winter solstice; others portray it is the galactic alignment with the “Dark Rift” at the center of our galaxy, out sun, and our planet and with this many cataclysmic events will occur; others portray is will be a great change or spiritual awakening will occur on this day.
All in all, the Mayans put a great significance on this year, not just because it’s the end of the Long Count, but also because it’s the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.
Hey, nothing may happen, but something may. Just have to wait
This is why there’s a misconception that December 21, 2012 is Doomsday.
This stuff (quoted from a Wikipedia article “2012″):
2012 geophysical and cosmological speculations
John Major Jenkins, and others [14] claim that an alignment will occur when the sun rises above the horizon on December 21 2012, at which point the sun will rise in the middle of the Milky Way Galaxy, thus causing an alignment between the earth, sun, and the galactic center.[15] This event is said to cause numerous earth changes, however that is not possible considering that the event is only a visual phenomenon from the earths perspective, which is caused by the precession of the equinoxes or the 26,000 year wobble of the earth, which only changes our perspective, not the actual position of the earth in relation to the galaxy. In short, there is no gravitational force or radiation to be expected from this event because other than the tilt of the earth, nothing will be any different than any other solstice. [16][17][18]
There are also claims like from Michael Tsarion [19] that an actual physical alignment of our entire solar system will occur with the horizontal plane of the Milky Way Galaxy on that day. The solar system is moving around the center of the galaxy every 225 million years or so, and while doing so is moving up and down in a cycle crossing the plane every 33 million years. According to the Journal Nature, this isn’t so because there is evidence of the solar system crossing the galactic plane 3 million years ago. This would mean that we are moving away from the galactic plane not toward it, and we won’t be due to cross it for another 30 million years.[20]
There are also theories that a currently unknown planet, sometimes referred to as planet x or Nibiru, which supposedly has an odd orbit that only enters the local solar system every 3600 years will return in 2012 causing many problems. [21] The idea is traced back to Zecharia Sitchin and his translations of Sumerian texts and specifically to his interpretation of the VA 243 cylinder seal which he says shows that the Sumerians knew of 12 planets (minus the sun and the moon which they considered planets) and as such, this would mean there is another planet. This idea has been challenged by his peers, most notably, Dr. Michael Heiser who has written several papers on the subject, [22] one of them detailing how and why Sitchins interpretation of VA 243 is wrong. [23]
Among other possible scenarios is that a shift of the earth’s magnetic poles may occur, and that this will leave the earth vulnerable to harmful radiation from the sun.[24] According to NASA this event does not occur on a particular day or year, but over the course of thousands of years, and contrary to popular belief the magnetic field does not vanish during this natural cycle, it just becomes more complex as it makes the transition.[25]
Some proponents of the pole shift scenario claim that this shift would be a physical movement of the poles of the earth, and not simply a magnetic shift. This event is called a true polar wanderer. Earth has experienced a few degree shift in the past, but nowhere near a reversal, and there is no reason to suggest this is likely or even possible. According to William Sager, a Texas A&M Oceanographer, a slight shift in the physical pole occurs at a rate between 5 and 10 degrees per million years, which means that this event could not happen on a particular day or year but only over a long period of time. [26]
2012 metaphysical speculations
2012 is claimed by some with New age beliefs to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or alternatively an apocalypse). There is disagreement among believers whether 2012 will see an end of civilization, or humanity will be elevated to a higher level.[27]
Many esoteric sources[who?] interpret the completion of the thirteenth B’ak’tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order.
Several authors have published works which claim that a major, world-changing event will take place in 2012:
* The 1997 book The Bible Code by Michael Drosnin claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, an asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth. Drosnin also states in his book that the Bible code only predicts possibilities.
* The 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses theories of a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012, creating a noosphere.
* Riley Martin claims that Biaviian aliens will allow passage aboard their ‘Great Mother Ship’ when the Earth is ‘transformed’ in 2012.
* Terence McKenna’s numerological novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which humankind will go through a great shift in consciousness.
* Dannion Brinkley, in his 2007 book, Secrets of the Light, a follow-up to his 1995 bestseller Saved by the Light, claims “that by the year 2012 humanity will expe
Its because the Mayan Calender ends on December 21st, 2012. That may not mean much to you but considering the fact that the mayans were practically astrological geniuses, it scares some people. They predict that civilization as we know it will come to an end and a new dawn of civilization will arise.
The mayans weren’t a bunch of doomsday whack jobs as most people would like to portray them as. They were pretty Intelligent people. I am on the fence about the whole doomsday scenario. In the Bible, it says the end of the world is not going to come when we expect it. Its going to surprise us out of no where so I believe that it is not going to happen as the Mayans predict.
I hope the Mayans are wrong. Their astrological predictions are VERY accurate so I just hope they made a mistake.
The Mayan Calendar ends on Dec 21st 2012, as does a Chinese calendar. There is speculation that their will be a polar shift. If you watch the History Channel they have entire specials on it.
Don’t worry about it, because if the end of the world was coming, what can you do about it? Nothing. Thats why people go on with their lives, going to college and saving money.
To tell the truth I don’t know if it’s true or not but it is said that the Ancient Mayans saw a prophecy. The prophecy said that the end of the world would come in the year 2012.
So we are all waiting to see what might happen. Don’t be scared now ok they said the same thing with June 6 2006….You know 666. But nothing happened.
The only reason why people are making a big fuss over it was because the ancient mayans were smart.
Hope that helped you out
12/21/2012
Because that is when the Mayan calender stops and when Nostradamus stopped predicting. The Mayan calender is considered the most accurate, even more than the one we use today.
I think the reason why ppl are still living their lives is because of Y2K. We were promised the end of the world as we know it, all because they didn’t put 19 in front of the years, so that when 2000 happened we would all go back to 1900.
You may not remember Y2K, you could be too young, but believe me, it was a BIG DEAL back then, although I thought it sounded stupid.
People even thought that it would happen in CA after midnight came in NY. I remember ppl standing in front of the TV watching the ball drop and wondering if the lights would go off. Duh, if it didn’t happen in NY, why do they think it will happen in CA?
People are scared, because ppl are stooopid.
well then, for those of u guys who said people say the mayan calendar will end on 2012, then why did they same thing in 2000 and in the 1990’s. whats the reason for that?? (i’m not attacking u guys). and mayan calendar ends 2012 because they didn’t bother counting that far ahead. besides, calendars are wrong all the time. even our present day calendar is wrong, thats why we have leap year, because some where along the line in our history, somebody screwed up the calendar.
all this the world will end is bs. the world will end whenever it does and even then, we won’t care because we will be dead
because of a exinct civilization of people called the Mayans that died out a 1000 years ago.
Their calender ends on 2012.
Laughs at everyone who tries to predict the end of the world, all ignorant. The world will end when someone launches their nukes.
There’s been end of the world predictions constantly since… Probably the beginning of conscious humanity.
Don’t sweat it, the last 19381923812 have turned out to be BS…
You know what p*****s me off though? That eventually, when some idiot at some countries HQ finally pushes the big red button because “God”, or “Allah” or “Whatever” “Told” him to… Some jerk will have made an end of the world prediction for that time. And they’ll think “OH GAWD I WAS RIGHT”… /scream.
No, supposedly the sun is going to be in perfect alignment with the milky way or the black hole or something and the planet will “reset” itself. Actually, the democrats got elected.
Because all of the planets are going to be aligned in the center of the galaxy. So highly religous people think that will be the end of the world.
They are saying that because they think the sun is going to completely break through the ozone layer. O_o (Because of pollution, littering, etc) At least that’s what I’ve heard. Plus global warming and everything. I don’t believe it myself.
People love drama. They PARTICULARLY love “end of the world” drama. But if in fact the Repubican’s DO get elected in 2012, the end of the world will definitely be closer, so there’s that.
Because they’re ignorant. It has nothing to do with any evidence. And the Repubs will *not* be getting elected in 2012.
All that will happen is that the Mayan calendar will end. Whoop dee do.
The same reason the world was supposed to end for the Mormans in 1900, 1908, 1926…
Maybe it did end and they really were right and we really aren’t here!
Maybe it ended in 1999?
well it was because the aztecs, (I think that was the group) and this other group of people’s calanders both ended then. But if you think about it, they were both writing in stone.
The world is not going to end in 2012…..
Unless Obama is killed in office….
And the republicans win……
And the new president is Sarah Palin…..
YIKES!
It has nothing to do with republicans or anything of that sort
Some people think the world will end in 2012 because thats when the mayan calenders ends.
Because the Mayan calender will end 2012… There’s an entire documentary about it on you tube. Look it up. very enlightening.
people are always saying the world is ending…. Nostradamus said the world would end in 1994, then people thought he meant 2000, now people think its 2012 because of the Mayan calender…. people are idiots….
“Why are people saying the world will end in 2012?”
Because this is the latest fad. The 2012ers will get distracted by something else before too long.
People claim the world will end every few years. The last time was around the year 2000. None of them have been right. So far.
they are saying it because the Aztec calender ends in 2012 or because a comet that is the size of Jupiter is going to hit the earth
Because they don’t know how to read. They think the Mayan calander just ends in 2012. It’ says nothing about the end of the world.
